Original Deerington Application

• Link to Accepted Deerington Application: Here. + canon update here. Also AC.

• Additional Adjustments to include:

Physical Changes: Oscar is 15 as of this past spring, nearly a year since arriving in Deerington. As such he has gotten somewhat taller and his hair is noticeably longer and shaggier. He opts to keep this in a small ponytail, as he likes the change. Other changes include:

-A scar on his shoulder where a tentacle monster bit into him during October, 2020
-Scarring on his left leg from injuries he sustained to his knee at the time.
-As of March 2021, the left leg is entirely gone from above the knee on down, after a deal with Julia to retrieve a friend's memories... at the price of having Salem turn Ruby into a monstrous Grimm and having Ruby devour the leg in her transformed state.

Positive Experiences:

- As strange as V7 was in general, the overall events in Atlas were actually a fairly high point for Oscar in canon. Although he was in a position where people still didn't necessarily see him as himself, RWBYJNR did-- and they were working in tandem to work with Ironwood as much as they could without revealing the horrible truths that they were privy to. Even though Oscar was left behind in Atlas for much of the time while the others were working in the field with their new licenses, he was able to train with everyone from his peers to Ironwood himself as an equal. His overall skills grew as a result, both in the physical and emotional sense. While Oz may not have been resent per se, it was easy to see why Oscar was chosen as the current host.

His adaptability, level headed thinking, ability to strategize, and leadership potential had a chance to shine through-- possibly for the first time in his life. As he stated later on in V8, he finally had the chance to see the person he was meant to be-- not a farmboy in the valleys of Mistral, but not Oz's newest Face either.

- In a strange, twisted affair, the impromptu Goth Party that was held at the Clockhouse in the aftermath of Salem turning Ruby into a Grimm and Oscar losing his leg was overall a very positive experience for Oscar. Although he was still recovering from his injuries, he was able to do so with his friends in close company-- for Gerard Keay had paid a visit and decided that everyone who dropped in needed a classic lesson in Goth DIY to help them feel a little better. While the prom went on across the street, the pile of teens and young adults that crowded into Oz's home were aided in bathtub hair dye jobs, hand done ear piercings with the tools that they had on hand, and a makeover that was complete with fabulous eyeliner, brightly painted nails, and whatever else their hearts desired.

Being allowed to express his frustrations and discomforts in an ultimately harmless manner helped Oscar and the others greatly-- and they all got a burst of whimsy that was desperately needed.

During all of this, Oscar saw exactly how many people were around that he could rely upon and it was gently explained to him that it was okay to not be okay with everything that was happening-- but that there were better ways of dealing. An ear piercing and a set of painted nails later, Oscar was emotionally feeling a lot better.

Among the various instances that happened was Oscar finding it in himself to transform into an Owl during an affair that wasn't a crisis-- all of his previous transformations, including his first conscious transformation into an Owl, had been instigated by a crisis-- and he and Dipper both confessed their feelings for each other.

Negative Experiences:

- A negative experience in canon ultimately rounds out to that incident on the mountain pass in V6 wherein the depth of Ozpin's lies was revealed by the spirit inside the Lamp, Jinn, when they asked after the truth. Ozpin, in his fear, frustration, and ultimately guilt, locked himself away in an inaccessible corner of the headspace which he shared with Oscar-- and left Oscar to clean up his mess. Not only was Oscar left to pick up the pieces, he also had to handle the brunt of everyone's anger. Ultimately, however, he was adrift-- and had no one to guide him forward. No one, except Ruby Rose and her endless compassion.

Although none of them knew the answer about what was to happen, Oscar still found it within himself to regain everyone's trust and respect... as himself, not a vessel for Oz. This leads into V8, where he openly discussed with Oz how much he resented the Wizard's return to the accessible part of their headspace. He had finally started figuring out how he fit into the greater dynamic, as himself. Having Oz back meant that his role was once more blurred... and that the boundaries between their identity would once again start to blur.

Oscar, for all appearances, seems to have accepted this inevitability. In V6 he even stated that he would help Ruby and company 'as long as he was able to'... however, in V8 he revealed his vulnerability on the matter while alone in his prison cell with only Oz as company: He was afraid of using their shared magic because he felt it speeding up their merger... and he wasn't ready for that.

- In Deerington itself, there are multiple events that can be listed. However, it is easies to say that the culmination of everything that happened in October 2020 is what kicked off Oscar's current arc. The chaos that is October resulted in Oscar having to deal with the ramifications of nearly all of his castmates be killed by one of their own, supporting Ruby as she spiraled into madness while she refused to acknowledge any of this only a week or so before her 18th birthday, and nearly all of his friends being severely injured-- himself included, having sustained difficult to heal injuries to his knee early in the month. This kickstarted Oscar's need to find his purpose and Agency within Deerington as a means of being able to do something that would have a positive effect on his friends and-- with luck-- the larger community as a whole.

This started with Oscar stress cooking and giving the extras to any of his friends or tangential CR who seemed like they needed it, as well as volunteering himself for dangerous tasks despite not being in the physical or mental shape to do so. This continued through February of 2021, after enduring a torturous canon update over the winter, supporting Ruby through having her eye gouged out in a fit of madness by a friend, and watching more of his friends and loved ones get injured or die as a result of Varian and Ford's Portal Plan in February-- then have more friends get injured or die in early March. No one called him on his self-injurious behaviors that were fueled by his depression over being unable to help the people he cared about until Mako and Gerry Keay both lectured him on his poor decision making in March.

It was a pity he hadn't spoken to Mako or Gerry sooner; he had already made a deal with Julia Sodder to pay the price to restore Varian's memory by that point-- and weeks later he lost the very leg that had been hurt during the affairs in October.

Significant Relations:

Cast:

Ruby Rose: Ruby is one of Oscar's most significant relations in canon due in part to their proximity in age and their 'smaller, more humble' natures, but also because Ruby was one of the first people to accept him as Himself after the process of merging with Ozpin began. The knowledge and memories he had begun to inherit from Ozpin even in the very beginning led him to be struck by her Silver Eyes and drawn in by her boisterous yet compassionate nature. She was his first companion in training, the person he turned to for advice when he was nervous or scared-- and, after the revelation in the snowy mountains outside of Argus that Ozpin had been hiding so much about the nature of their world, she was the first to try to offer him comfort while they cleaned up the mess. The two of them often times are thinking on a similar pattern and fall into step without much need for coordination.

This relationship has grown over the months spent together under the same roof in Deerington. Oscar initially mistook his growing feelings for her as a puppy crush, but the further realization that those possessing Silver Eyes are decent from the Wizard Ozma's hosts led to unfortunate implications with that possible step. Instead, Ruby explained that she viewed Oscar as something like a kid brother-- naturally, Oscar was elated.

He never had any older siblings before. Now he had the Rose-Xiao Long sisters... and, per character dynamics that further arose in Deerington, Emerald Sustrai.

Emerald Sustrai: Oscar and Emerald barely know each other by their current canon points in the world of Remnant. Their only connections are through Salem and Hazel Rainhart-- an angry and vengeful behemoth of a man who holds Headmaster Ozpin accountable for the death of his younger sister Gretchen, who had been training as a Huntress at the time of her death. Their only meetings had been on the battle field, where Hazel took point in fighting Oscar because his goal was to fight Ozpin. The fact that a boy who was younger than his sister at the time of her unfortunate death didn't even register to him. However, it was this connection through Hazel that Oscar and Emerald initially bonded in Deerington, as Emerald had been one of the ones to help him after Oscar's canon update, wherein he was beaten and tortured for information by Salem's order, but at the hands of Hazel. They further bonded over Ruby and their shared interest in supporting her, wherein they discussed their fears of their future in Remnant and Oscar vowed to find a way to help Emerald escape from Salem one way or another. In bonding over their shared siblinghood with Ruby and Yang, as well as discussions about their missing parents, Emerald and Oscar began to regard each other as siblings as well.

Information from Jaune and Qrow in late May suggested that the promise to help Emerald escape had been fulfilled, but the overall cost of everything that happened in Atlas sounded like it was far too much to bear in comparison. The fact that the promise had been fulfilled gave Oscar a small amount of hope that, perhaps, a fragment of their growth in Deerington had been brought into their original timeline on Remnant... however, this is still not enough to encourage Oscar to return for any reason.

Ozpin: Oscar's relationship with Ozpin has grown by leaps and bounds in Deerington from the place where it was in Atlas. Per Oscar's canon update, Ozpin is just starting to speak to him again while they are in Salem's clutches and being tortured for information. In Deerington, they have had time to work through their complicated emotions and feelings that they were not granted in canon-- and they have found an accord.

Oscar wishes to remain in the Waking World so that he can have a chance to live as himself.... and Ozpin wishes for the opportunity to put down his millennia-long quest to defeat his ex-wife and finally rest. With the opportunities to grow and individualize under Julia Sodder's watch, which they will not be granted by the Gods of Light and Darkness in Remnant, they have together already altered their fate and started to find themselves. The merger that they are fated to undergo in Remnant has been halted in Deerington, and will continue to be so in the Waking World. They can each find themselves, and help each other grow into the people that they were meant to be... as Master and Apprentice.

Deerington CR:

Dipper Pines: If there is one problem Oscar has had, it was finding and maintaining friends close to his age. This was further exacerbated by his partial merger with Ozpin, which has led to a depth of knowledge and an oddly mature note to his personality that didn't fit a young teenager. The fact that Dipper Pines entered the picture at all was happenstance-- they met and discovered they shared similar interests, but it wasn't until the Winter of 2020, when they were both still recovering from the fallout from October's disasters on top of both Oscar and Ozpin recovering from being tortured by Salem over their visit back to Remnant, that they truly connected. Ozpin and Ford Pines had been in the slow starting phases of their own relationship at the time, and a standing date with Ford had both Oz and Oscar (conveniently turned into a songbird thanks to a magical warp at the time) out in the snow while injured and, eventually, at the Pines residence to wait out the storm. It was there that Dipper's intelligence, cleverness, and general respect struck Oscar-- and in the weeks that followed Oscar continued seeking Dipper out.

He wanted to learn more about Dipper as a person... and it was nice to have someone closer to his age for the first time in a long while.

The Portal Disaster of February which lead to multiple deaths within Oscar's social circle had him visiting the Pines residence multiple times to check on the family and give Dipper some company. However, March proved no better-- with Varian dying and losing his memory and Salem's arrival facilitating Ruby's horrific transformation into a Grimm so powerful that it could talk. The culmination of these events led to Oscar losing his leg, and it was Dipper's turn to help him pick up the pieces. This little game they had of repeatedly rescuing each other was what had the both of them confessing their affections on the night of Prom, when an impromptu depression fueled makeover party had broken out across the street at Ozpin's mansion residence that was dubbed The Clockhouse. Both boys were elated that they had their feelings returned, but they didn't have long to enjoy this.

Days later Deerington was transformed into a desert, and over the following weeks circumstances steadily became too dangerous for them to meet in person. Ozpin and Ford had a falling out late Spring over the extent of Ozpin's lies, which Oscar had been partly complicit in. When approached with questions about the truth by Dipper, Oscar revealed them without second thought.

He was relieved that Dipper's feelings had not changed.

Although their ultimate goals and plans for what to do as the dream broke down differed, Oscar and Dipper both agreed that they wanted to remember their experiences together. They exchanged gifts before they entered the Beach Between Worlds, hoping to keep their bond strong as they entered the next world.

Varian: The relationship Oscar has with Varian is an interesting one-- one one hand they bring out the best of intentions within each other, but also the worst of their flaws come out while trying to carry out those intentions. Varian was the first person Oscar told his situation to within the bounds of Deerington, and the subsequent frustration and anger he has observed within Varian in reaction to this has certainly influenced Oscar's further explanations of his relationship to Ozpin with other people, even if they aren't from Remnant and are unaffected by it.

Oscar additionally has been vocal about not wanting to return to Remnant during his time in Deerington, and it would be a lie to suggest that Oscar's predicament of losing himself to the soul merger he shared with Ozpin, which had been halted in Deerington, was not a factor in Varian's decision to go forward with his plot with the Portals.

The details of this were hidden from everyone, including Oscar, until the last moment-- and Oscar promised to have Words with Varian on the matter regardless of their success or failure. When the Portals started to fail, he rescued Varian from the collapse in a last ditch effort to salvage something from the failed experiment while using the last dregs of magic that he could grasp while Oz perished on the other side of the doorway. Although they were both safe, they both had acted selfishly in a manner to save the other that left the both of them hurt.

Although they talked it out, Varian was then slain by Maul just over a week later. This being his second death, Varian lost a significant portion of his memory. Oscar, still reeling from so many losses, crises, and disasters in a short span of time, cut a deal with Julia Sodder to pay the price for Varian to regain his memories. This was later carried out by Salem through transfiguring Ruby into a beast, who then rampaged.

Oscar's leg was lost in this process, but Varian's memories regained. There were more hard feelings after this, but they recovered-- both more confident and open about their struggles than before.

The Tenth Doctor: The Doctor has been a baffling enigma to Oscar from the start-- but a benign and kindly one nonetheless. They first met not long after Oscar's arrival, when the Doctor brought him to Leonard McCoy for medical assistance. A teasing scan of the tricorder revealed instantly that the Doctor was in possession of two hearts... and the surprises only continued from there. Throughout all of the crises and trials that the residents of Deerington have faced, The Doctor took extra care to treat Oscar exactly as he was: a child. A child burdened with an uncanny maturity and responsibility, but a child nonetheless. Check-ins on Oscar after his various injuries often resulted in both gifts of items to help provide relief as well as visits accompanied by tea and sweets.

Their various run ins together eventually pulled out their mutual truth-- that they both are the bearers of a fate that involves watching over the world while passing through different lifetimes with different faces and identities. They were the same. Along with Avatar Korra, whom they realized also shared a similar fate, they started a small support group together where they could discuss their experiences with people who understood and would not judge.

Additionally, to further Oscar's confusion, it steadily became apparent that the Doctor considered Oscar to be something like family-- even joking with Jack Harkness about adopting the boy. While Oscar is still currently negotiating his role as younger brother to the Rose-Xiao-Long sisters and Emerald Sustrai, he's touched by the Doctor's insistence that they are family as well.

In the summer of 2021, as a show of the Doctor's consideration, Oscar was gifted a replica of the Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver. It is fully functional-- and an exceedingly high honor that Oscar does not yet know the full scope of.

Chapter 2 Attributes

• Canon Powers: Oscar is in many ways a young man who is defined by who he is not... and who he is not is the late headmaster of Beacon Academy, Ozpin. Although Oscar is the most recent vessel in that immortal soul's continual cycle of reincarnation, he does not possess the same skill level as the former headmaster in any regard. While it is true that Ozpin was previously able to take control of Oscar's body for limited periods, events in Volume 6 led to Ozpin burying his conscious aspect deep within their shared mind and not even communicating internally with the young man whose body he has co-opted.

Oscar by and large does not have the level of training that his comrades have. While he is able to defend himself and the farm he was living on from small Grimm, it's taken him weeks if not months of intensive training to even come close to being able to fend for himself in actual combat. Thanks to that training, and the times when Ozpin would take the reigns and fight with Oscar's body, Oscar has picked up a good deal more strength and stamina than he used to have-- but he does not yet fully have the muscle memory to fight as effectively as his friends. While his base combat style resembles Ozpin's in it's reliance on the telescopic cane he carries and quick switches between offensive and defensive movements, Oscar still tires quickly and can only maintain such standards for short durations.

As he is much smaller than many of his friends, he is also not nearly as fast as them and has repeatedly lost pace when in tense situations, both becoming lost and putting himself in danger.

Beyond combat skills, Oscar has a keen eye for analytical insight despite his youth and relative lack of training. He is able to identify threats and help guide a fairly sizeable team of individuals toward victory in combat. Additionally, despite his tendency toward anxiety Oscar has the fantastic ability to press forth regardless of his fears and worries. He was able to land a crashing airplane safely because of this ability to emotionally compartmentalize.

Due to his prior experience as a farmhand, Oscar additionally has the agricultural skills required of such a lifestyle. Not only is he able to manage gardening and cooking, he has general handyman skills that were useful when the trailer the team was going to use for transport needed a tire changed.

Regarding the baseline skills and abilities from the canon, they are as follows:

Aura: All natives to Remnant have an Aura, which is a manifestation of an individual's soul and can be used to manifest a barrier in times of duress or allow for a greater range of offensive skills by being channeled into a weapon. Within Deerington, Oscar trained alongside Qrow Branwen and other members of his cast to gain greater control of his Aura, and he now has enough skill to shield himself from extreme weather conditions for a short period of time.

Semblance: A person's Semblance is an extension of their person that is, in effect, a super power on it's own. Typically these abilities are treated as no different from a muscle that needs to be exercised and trained before reaching full capacity, and are described as being a manifestation of a person's character. As Oscar is so young and untrained, he has yet to discover what his Semblance actually will manifest as. Given his connection to the Magic of Remnant, he may never need to manifest a Semblance.

Magic: This is a rarity in the world of Remnant. As being the latest vessel in the spirit Ozma's reincarnation cycle, Oscar potentially has access to magical capabilities from millennia ago that the world has forgotten. However, as his association with this status is so recent and the last incarnation in this cycle, Ozpin, stopped speaking to him, there is minimal chance that Oscar will be able to access this on his own. The word 'minimal' is used due to the fact that at the end of Volume 7, Oscar was able to access it during a climactic moment to shield himself and break a would be fatal fall not once but twice.

For other skills that may prove relevant, we must look to Ozpin's multitude of secrets. Although the late headmaster has not been forthcoming with many details about himself, we do have evidence that Ozpin was able to give two individuals-- Qrow and Raven Branwen--the ability to shapeshift into birds. Although Oscar has no idea how to manifest this skill at this juncture, it would be interesting if times of stress have him accidentally turning those around him into birds, with shapeshifting that cannot be controlled and remaining in this state for random periods of time. Obviously this is something that would be discussed with other players too, but it would also add an interesting psychological element to an already stressful situation.

Additions for Deer Country:

Recent events in canon revealed that his canon weapon, The Long Memory, is effectively a concentrated magic nuclear bomb when the right conditions are met. Oscar no longer carries this as of events in Deerington; he passed it back to Ozpin.

For the general utility of Ch.2, I will be nullifying these extensive and nebulous abilities to the standards that every one with any training in RWBY has: the magic shield that can regenerate, and the slowed variant of self healing. We do not yet have canon information on his Semblance-- a superpower like ability that is unique to individuals, and details will be updated when and if that information becomes available.

Regarding the general use of magic, this will be limited to the transformation type magic that Oscar primarily used within the context of Deerington. It suits his personality and his current desires, and should mesh well with a variety of the abilities that come with the Paleblood that he will be gaining upon application acceptance.

He will be maintaining his telepathic, empathic, sensory connection with Ozpin, as their souls have already partly merged by their canon update in December, 2020. Having separate bodies within Deerington and Deer Country have allowed them freedoms that they never could have in Remnant, but their souls and fates are too intertwined to ever be fully separated again.

Additionally, as he has stepped further beyond the Farmhand he was at the start of his journey and become more like the Wizard he is supposed to be, Oscar will retain a minimum of the reincarnation status that was placed upon the Wizard and all of his hosts by the God of Light. In Deer Country, this will last for 24 hours and he will merely be a disembodied voice in the mind of a random individual (with permission!) whom he has a strong personal connection with. As this is a 'blessing' of the gods and not related to the magic of Remnant, this is unaffected by any changes.

Given that Oscar effectively had a No Death Run for himself in Deerington, he may see this as further proof of facing consequence for his apparent misdeeds.

• Blood Type: Paleblood
• Omen: Diggs, his Dream Guide, will shift to the shape of a small deer with owl-like claws and wings-- a Peryton, if you will. This is a reflection of both Oscar's growing Agency as an individual and his current feelings that he may never be fully free of Remnant... but that's okay.
• Blessed Day: 12/28 (Not the headcanon birthday, but anniversary of his Canon Update)
• Patron Pthumerian: Dorothea (although, lets face it, he vibes with Argonaut)
• Blood Power Manifestation: Telepathy, amped up Empathy, Dream Walking. Physically his circadian rhythm will be inverted to being primarily nocturnal, and his hazel eyes will gleam like an owl's under the moonlight.

Telepathy: This is going to be the big one for Oscar, and the rest of his abilities will fall in line as tangential with this. Ever since meeting Fox in Deerington (as they were separated by crises and on opposite sides of the world despite being in the same overall storyline), Oscar has been nothing short of fascinated with Fox's telepathic Semblance. He already regularly communicated with Ozpin through direct mind contact, and hearing the voice of another in his headspace who wasn't connected to the fate placed on them by the God of Light was a very novel experience. As the transformations that we see within the overall context of RWBY canon do not involve the transformed individual being able to communicate with anyone through spoken word, this skill will naturally compensate for the apparent shortcoming and further enable Oscar to stay in contact with the people he loves regardless of his physical circumstances.

In time, and with training from his spiritually inclined friends like Vyng and Rei Hino, Oscar will likely figure out how to telepathically communicate with animals and/or spirits, as they apply to his connections and bonds within Trench.

Odds are, due to his kind and open nature, he will end up with unwitting encounters with spuritual phenomena before he thinks to ask for help. His horse, Shortcake, and any housemates or other close bonds will likely be involved in early encounters.

Empathy: Oscar is a naturally empathetic individual, even without an empathy-based Semblance like what his team mate Lie Ren possesses. He is the kind of person who connects with people emotionally in the manner that someone with a smaller and kinder soul does-- and his biggest troubles up until this point have been based around keeping those he cares about safe, both physically and emotionally. He is actively learning how to take care of himself, but his guilt over his role in Julia Sodder's Death-- wherein he shared the information that Ozpin died for, which suggested that sacrificing Julia and most of her attending party would release them from the pain they endured and grant them a chance at new life-- is something that haunts him.

Many of Oscar's struggles are based on the deeper nuance of emotion, both positive and negative. He feels very deeply, in a manner that ill befits a boy of fifteen now, and battling with his his own guilt while facing the potential to be inflicted with Corruption states and using his telepathy with varying degrees of responsibility are going to take a toll on his shields and leave him more susceptible to accidentally taking on emotional states associated with the people or locations he surrounds himself with.

Dream Walking: The crux of Oscar's problem with identity in RWBY is the fact that he is privy to thousands of years of memory that he accesses with varying levels of conscious choice-- thanks to the continued two-way merger that he is facing with Ozpin. There are moments in canon where it is even questioned who is speaking between the two of them-- Oscar or Ozpin. With the blending of knowledge, idiosyncratic verbal and body language, and how Oscar is already able to visualize affairs that happened before his body was even born in his mind... dream walking seems like a natural extension.

His internal space is already compromised to a degree. With the barriers between minds blurred thanks to the telepathy, of course that will continue while he is asleep.

This will also become more exacerbated as he faces corruption states, and his own internal headspace will look more surreal and disjointed while in those states.

Note: Any Empathy and Dream Walking that Oscar experiences will be a result of secondary experiences and not necessarily be his primary power set.
