[ The anxiety spikes keeping Varian from sleeping and prompting all this nonsense sure doesn't ease at all on hearing that- but it does give him something to focus on that's more important than inane bullshit that comes randomly into his head in the wee small hours.]
Wait, you're not dreaming? Like... at all?
...
Oscar this is a weird place and I know you can turn into a bird so now I really have to ask if you're being flippant or if you've actually been eating chipmunks whole.
Welcome to my side of the magic or science question.
It's less READING someone's thoughts and more like HEARING them, as if they were being said aloud. It's also stronger with people I already know, but I don't know how everything will work as we spend more time in this world.
We're all changing. So, I guess we're all going to have to help each other with this.
Oh. That's...creepy and weird. Is it based on proximity? Like can you only hear the other people in your house? Or...well, you know me so could you read my thoughts where I am right now?
[Varian's just going to think very hard about an alembic, because his brain is still all kinds of fuzzy from his anxiety not-sleep but he's still a fuckin' nerd.]
I guess so. I knew we were headed for a new life here, but I didn't think that meant 'actual magical powers now, have fun with that'.
I don't know how it works yet, it's not something I've actually tried to do. It just happens.
Someone from home actually does this with his Semblance. I was going to ask him for help.
[When Oscar concentrated, all he got from the presence he knew to be Varian was a static buzzing and blurred images. He didn't know what to focus on. ]
All we can do is try to stay calm and work together right now.
I guess we should have expected something as insane as this to happen to us. Glad you have someone from home who knows what he's doing with this sort of thing. I've gone to Mako for help with my fire thing. I figured he was the most qualified person to ask for help.
That's true. It's worked well for us so far, no need to stop now.
I think we're all gonna be working with teachers we didn't think of before. I was already starting to work with Fox on Aura Sensing-- he's blind, but you'd never know it from being with him. I don't know how he did it, but he was the first person to know the exact details of my situation without me needing to explain it.
He's that cool.
Mako's really cool, too. He gave me some advice in the spring that I'm going to follow through on. I honestly didn't think that anyone would be interested in learning how to grow backyard zucchinis until he mentioned it.
Oh wow, that's cool. I didn't even know that was a thing. Is it his semblance? Or is it something that's come from his blindness? I...guess like getting better hearing or smell, but in Remnant that extends to auras?
I think that's a life skill a lot of people in town will need to pick up on. Most of them weren't in the same position as me and you and growing up around farm work. It's probably an alien concept for a lot of them, but that doesn't mean they can't be taught.
[Oscar had been trying-- and failing-- to catch some sleep in the afternoon. The fatigue of their travel through the tides, multiple days of a dreamless, fitful sleep, and the fall out he had been putting off since the Dream started to fracture was catching up with him.
There was little choice but to at least try.
--Until the scream, felt more than heard, sent him flying out of his bed and onto the floor in an ungainly heap of tangled blankets and limbs that felt like jelly.
His heart pounded in his ears. Adrenaline surged while he fought for clarity and recognition. He knew that voice-- he felt that overwhelming terror that threatened to sink him into the ground.
Scrambling, Oscar reached out in the way he knew how to with Oz, with Fox-- for the only other person he knew to try with.]
[Oscar's reach connects with something, but it's not what he hopes it is. He meets a wall of rushing water, something solid and chaotic that just won't let Oscar through.]
[And then, after several moments of him trying, the connection will go dead silent.]
[It was stunning to encounter-- although his body was dry, he still felt the impression of becoming soaked in the spray and the tumult of the current. He could just barely keep his head above it--
Then it was gone.
Panicking, Oscar shifted to a different strategy.]
The only thing that's his actual Semblance is his telepathy. The rest of it anyone from Remnant can learn if they had the patience, skill, and the right teachers. It's not easy, though. And, because he's blind, he had to practice hard at it out of necessity.
It's part of why he's so strong in a fight. His Aura is never down.
Anyone can be taught if they want to be. That's why I'm going to be the best teacher I can and share what I know.
Trench may end up overrun with zucchinis, but it's better than not having any food at all.
[The name seems to echo through whatever link Oscar has extended to Dipper. It comes back to him, and this time, there's an impression that comes with it.]
[Something has opened. There's no longer a torrent but a gentle curtain of water, instead. Passable but with no way to know what's on the other side. If Oscar were to extend his reach, maybe he could cross through it.]
From what I understand about Aura's that's pretty impressive. That's probably going to come in useful - just in case this place turns out as dangerous as Deerington was.
Well, I wouldn't say they don't have any food at all- just not a lot of crops. There's been people surviving here for a long time, by the looks of things. Though it sure looks more mushroom-y and seafood than anything else.
[It's always nice to get out and about on beautiful days. Some of the residents of Trench have been burying items in the ground as part of a ritual, one that he feels no need to participate in- so he's decided instead to get a breath of fresh air. Maybe he'll see someone he knows and stick his nose where it doesn't belong, as usual.
Today he's chosen to wander about in Gaze, and he finally comes upon a mansion in red and blue flowers. Outside, he sees a figure. Strolling up, he quickly recognizes Oscar.]
Well, well! I wasn't expecting to find you here, Oscar.
[Despite the obvious fatigue in his stance and under his eyes, Oscar beamed at the sight of a friend. Shovel in hand, he had been busy digging out in the gardens-- the pile of clothes folded neatly nearby suggested that someone else had heard about the rituals as well.
Setting the shovel aside, Oscar trotted over to greet his friend.]
Yeah. The house is not my style, but a lot of my friends are here. Our houses kinda got destroyed around the same time, so we decided to just... stay together until we figured out what to do.
But... this seems to be working for us! I don't think we'll be changing it any time soon.
