I did, loudly and repeatedly. Look at us, great minds think alike. Or, you know, people with the tiniest fragment of common sense think alike.
[He likes to think it's more of the common sense thing, but that's mostly because he's still mad that Clover called him Notscar. Mostly because he believes Oscar deserves better than that. ]
See? So even you guys need time to learn it. You can't just throw people off the roof and see what happens. We're not cats!
I'm different. It's not like whatever happens will affect my world. The stakes aren't the same for me and so I'm a little less gung-ho on the whole immortal-being-in-your-head thing.
[He's more concerned with Oscar being able to remain himself. That feels more important.]
Oh wow the rabbits that like the alcohol? Me and Glitch came across one of those and it was a pretty bad time for Glitch. Did they show you something not awful? But yeah, that's smart. It sounds like water is gonna be an issue, too. Might wanna stock up on that, too.
I haven't given them any whiskey, though they keep asking. They like the muffins okay, but it's a little hard for me to get them what they want right now.
[Because of Qrow. He wasn't comfortable asking a recovering alcoholic to get him a bottle of whiskey for haunted hares.]
But seriously, thanks. It's really hard knowing what to do.
Yeah, the rules of alcohol sales are really weird in the future. Apparently you have to be 21 to be able to drink which is so not how it works in my time period, but whatever, I guess.
[No one cares back home. There's no such thing as a drinking age. He really doesn't get it.]
Don't mention it. We all need someone in our corner, right?
That's crazy! We're here risking our lives and they really care to regulate that? Really?
[Not... that he drank or even wanted to, he just thought it was a waste of resources.]
We do all need someone in our corner. And, if there's something you think I can help you with? Don't be afraid to ask. Even if it's just dinner, I'll make it work.
[Most of the laws were nonsensical to Oscar-- but, coming from a world where monsters would destroy the very foundation of a person's life if they expressed even the barest thread of fear, most laws were somewhat nonsensical.]
At least I don't try to mix cheese for a lasagna in a blender!
Do you have any requests? I'm not world class, but I can make most things if I have a recipe.
You're the hero that house needs but probably doesn't deserve.
[He likes the Remnant gang plenty, but he's pretty sure Oscar is the ONLY one that's not actively on fire.]
Yup. Fern moved in to take care of me after I- died. And just stayed. Glitch kinda just ended up here one day. It's nice to have other people in the house, honestly.
[They remind him of things he has to do like eat and sleep.]
[But he was worried-- just as he felt certain that, whatever Varian's crimes were, they didn't warrant execution. That Bear had wreaked such havoc upon the town that Oscar was amazed that they weren't any more troubled than they currently were.]
It was. And if you need me for ANYTHING the next time you're in trouble, anything at all, feel free to ask. I don't want Ruby feeling like she has to protect the entire town, but I also don't want any of my friends feeling like they're stuck without a hand either.
Trust me, both of us would rather Ruby stop trying to save literally everyone. I doubt she'll ever stop, but trying to make what she carries around less is about as good as we can aim for.
[Somehow, it was a relief that someone else saw and understood Ruby in a way that was close to how he did. She was a phenomenal person-- asking her to stop simply wouldn't work.
She was a tornado of rose petals and spunk. Nothing could stop her.]
Thanks. I feel better knowing that you're there. In this town, all we've got is each other.
[It was okay. Even Oscar had a hard time grasping he had a role to play in anyone's life as anything more than a farmhand. And yet... he persisted, to try to become someone worthy of such a role.]
Glad we see the same thing, then.
In the meanwhile, I'm doing some cooking pretty soon. Do you have any requests or are you okay with anything hot and filling?
[Varian still counts Oscar as a badass- you HAVE to be, to exist in Remnant, he's pretty sure of it. ]
Hot and filling would be amazing, thank you. At the very least, it might mean Glitch will have less of a breakdown trying to scavenge for supplies AND remember to eat.
[And him remembering to eat at all, but that's a given.]
[--Cue Oscar's drive to be responsible kicking in upon reading those words. Thinking of his three friends, all young men without much experience to their name, he suddenly found himself worried.]

tw: underage drinking????
[No one cares back home. There's no such thing as a drinking age. He really doesn't get it.]

[Crap. Now Oscar has to ask Qrow!]

[Not that the American beer here is any good, but he lives in Fantasy Germany, it's kind of hard to beat.]
Sure, that would be great. Ruby did say you're a pretty good cook.

How badly did she break the blender?
Well, Fern doesn't eat but Glitch and I do. Anything that keeps well is usually a good idea. Unless Glitch reminds me I usually forget mealtimes.

[One thing everyone liked about Ruby, but what got her into the most trouble, was that she moved fast!]
Wait, you're living with Glitch and Fern? I had no idea you all lived together! That makes it easy to figure this out.

[That was news to him-- and suddenly he feels terrible.]
I'm sorry
Ruby died in July and I was so wrapped up in that and so overwhelmed
Varian.
I'm sorry I didn't help you with that.

[Despite what people say to the contrary, he still feels he kind of deserved it.]
Don't worry about it, Oscar. It was a really bad month for everyone.

Give him a moment, Oscar. Even if he was here for a hundred years, he doesn't think he'll get used to people saying they feel better he's around. ]
Oh. Well, thanks. You're right. We have to look out for one another here. If we don't, that's where it all starts to fall apart.

Varian. Do any of you know how to use a kitchen?
[Somehow he doubted it.]
no subject
I know how to cook! I just forget to. A lot. Busy doing science stuff, it happens.
I know Fern can make soup now?
[He literally opens a can and heats it, it's not making soup.]
I think Glitch can like. Cook an egg?

[Growing teenagers, active teenagers, living in a town of known horrors...
Varian, please.]

It's not JUST canned soup and eggs. There's coffee too. And sometimes Ruby sends us a pizza?

He just forgets to ...you know.
Eat it.]
Just makes sure you take care of yourself, too. That's important. You don't want to fall apart while you're looking after someone else.
